‘Who pats the chicken, eats the egg,’ says a traditional proverb in Kosova, where scores of poor families are turning to poultry farming to boost their livelihoods.
Islamic Relief has given 50 families with orphaned children everything they need to set up small-scale poultry farms. Receiving chickens and equipment such as hen houses or incubators, the families were also trained by our veterinary team to care for their animals into the future.
The new, sustainable source of income has boosted family earning power – and the poultry also means families also have eggs and meat to supplement their diet.
“I love chickens,” says a young girl named Albana*, welcoming the project in Drenas municipality. “I am going to gather their eggs and eat them with my little brother when my mommy cooks for us.”
Islamic Relief has been working in Kosova for 20 years, serving vulnerable people across the country.
